Join the brilliant Karen Wright (Great British Bake Off Contestant from series 9) live from Wakefield, UK who will teach you the skills you need to master her wonderful Gala Pie, caramelsied onion chutney, pickled veg and a tomato & mango salad.

This class takes place on Sunday 9th July 2023 at the following times:

9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET / 5pm UK GMT

Please allow 2 hours for this class.

Come and bake a sharing pork pie which, when cut, reveals a line of sunny bolied eggs and topped with a delicate pastry lattice. You'll also learn how to make Karen's delicious caramelised onion chutney, crunchy pickled vegetables as well as Karen's personal favourite: her tangy tomato & mango salad. A perfect assortment for a summer picnic.

Bake With A Legend Online Classes are an interactive experience, where we limit group sizes to around 25 to ensure an intimate online setting. Not only do you have your celebrity baker teaching you, but you also have one of our brilliant Bake With A Legend hosts who will ensure the smooth running of your experience ensuring everyone is enjoying themselves.

If you need any help at any point during the class, you’ll be encouraged to raise your hand and your baker will be virtually joining you in your own kitchen in no time to assist you!

You’ll bake along in tandem with Karen, learning many tips and tricks a long the way as you perfect all the skills required to make her fabulous picnic treats. Karen will also be on hand to answer your questions, be those about baking or her experiences of being involved on such an iconic television show.

Tickets are priced at £35 for individuals and £50 for groups of two or more that will join from the same screen. Please note we can accept requests to move classes with two or more weeks notice prior to the class – any requests to do so, will incur a £5 administrative charge.

Once booked in, all guests will be emailed a full recipe and the zoom link required to join us for the class. Just in case you don’t spot it please check junk mail!

1 loaf tin (4.5 inches x 8.5 inches x 2.5 inches)

For the Pie Pastry:

275g (2 cups + 2 tbsp) plain/all-purpose flour 

135g (9 tbsp) cold diced unsalted butter

1 tbsp paprika  

½ tsp salt

1 large (XL in US) egg 

1 tbsp water

For the Pie Filling:

450g (~2 cups) minced pork 

450g (~2 cups) pork sausage meat*

half a grated onion  

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

2 tbsp fine breadcrumbs  

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper  

1 tbsp thyme

handful fresh parsley, finely chopped  

4 eggs

beaten egg for brushing and a little, honey/maple syrup or sweet chili sauce for glazing (optional)

*You can also use your favorite sausages and take them out of the skins

For the chutney:

400g (~2 cups) finely sliced and chopped red onions

3 tbsp oil 

80g (⅓ cup) brown sugar

½ tsp chili flakes  

150ml (⅔ cup) balsamic vinegar

For the picked veg:

400g (~ 2 ½ cups) vegetables of your choice** 

300ml (1 ⅓ cups) cider vinegar

125ml (½ cup) water 

1 tbsp salt

1 tbsp sugar

pickling whole spices: caraway seeds/mustard/cloves/peppercorn etc.

**Anything crunchy that can be eaten raw will be fine (carrot, celery and red bell pepper etc.)

For the tomato & mango salad:

200g (~1 cup) fresh tomatoes chopped into small chunks

1 red onion finely sliced 

pinch of salt

1 tbsp mango chutney 

handful of fresh coriander/cilantro
