About the Event

Join the brilliant Andrew Smyth (GBBO, series 7) live from Derby, England on Saturday 13th March at 5pm UK for a St Patrick's themed baking class, tackling two bakes with an Irish twist. In this class Andrew will teach you to bake Treacle Wheaten Bread as well as Guiness Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting.

“Wheaten” bread is an Irish/Scottish traditional loaf that is similar to soda bread, but with a richer flavour from the use of different flours. Andrew's Guinness Cupcakes are rich and moist, with a topping resembling the frothy “black stuff” you’ll get in pubs around Ireland. A deep and decadent treat, perfect for an Irish celebration!

We’ll start off the class with an introductory welcome and some background from Andrew's time on TV, before we ask you to put on your aprons and bake along as you watch Andrew demonstrate all the skills required to make this lovely treat. Our class will take around 1h 45 minutes as we bake our masterpieces, before you can tuck into the fruits of your labour all whilst hearing fantastic memories and stories from Andrew.

Equipment:

Baking tray, mixing bowl, muffin tin.

Ingredients: Wheaten Bread

325g strong wholemeal bread flour plus a little extra to dust

125g plain white flour (all purpose)

1 tsp fine sea salt

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

2 tbsp caster sugar (superfine)

450 ml (or grams) buttermilk or (440ml milk + 2 tbsp lemon juice)

40g black treacle

Ingredients: Cupcakes

125ml (125g) guinness or stout

125g unsalted butter

40g cocoa powder

200g caster sugar (superfine) or golden caster sugar

80g soured cream

1 large egg (XL in US/Canada)

½ tbsp vanilla extract

135g plain flour (cake or all purpose flour)

1 heaped tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

Ingredients: The icing

150g cream cheese

75g icing sugar (confectioners)

1 tsp cornflour (cornstarch)

125ml double cream (heavy)
